Notes for Planting

We share expert tips for a successful growing season.

Proper Planting for Long-Term Success

Before Planting

Before Planting

  • Saturate the root ball with water and allow it to sit overnight.
Digging the Hole

Digging the Hole

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot base.
  • Depth should be 1.5 times the pot depth.
  • Keep the top 3–4 inches of sod/topsoil separate.

Mix excavated soil with a pinch of potash before backfilling.

Setting the Tree

Setting the Tree

  • Position so the root ball sits 1 inch above the surrounding soil level.
  • Backfill halfway, add water, let soak, then complete filling.
  • Create a circular soil dam to retain water.
Wildlife Protection (Essential)

Wildlife Protection (Essential)

Use:

  • 10 ft length of 5 ft tall welded rabbit wire
  • Form into a cylinder using outdoor zip ties
  • Secure with an 8 ft T-post

This discourages moose and rabbits from damaging the young tree.

Watering

Watering

  • Once weekly for the first two growing seasons
  • Fill the watering well and allow a full soak

Mulch with 3–4 inches of leaves, but keep the mulch 3 inches away from the trunk base to prevent rodent damage.
